Violence broke out Monday night after the West Indian American Day Parade in Brooklyn, New York.
The New York Police Department ( NYPD ) said at least five people were shot and two others were slashed in separate incidents on or near Eastern Parkway within a two-hour span.

The violence comes despite a major boost of security for this year's parade following a fatal shooting at last year's event.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said thousands of officers were deployed along the nearly two-mile route, supported by helicopters, drones and barricades designed to separate marchers from spectators.
