A fire damaged a home and a neighboring building in New London early Tuesday morning.

A New London Fire Department ambulance returning from an emergency call saw smoke near Broad Street shortly before 2 a.m. After looking around the neighborhood, crews said they found a single-family home on Vauxhall Street that was heavily on fire.

The first firefighters found heavy fire conditions throughout the home. Fire officials said due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters originally knocked down the bulk of the flames from the outside of the building before transitioning to the interior.

According to fire officials, a neighboring building also sustained thermal damage. The extent of the damage is unclear.
