When the Brandon Mental Health Centre closed its doors in the early 1990s, many former residents returned to their home communities facing uncertainty and isolation. Out of that transition came a new kind of gathering place that continues to thrive three decades later.

On July 17, the Swan River HERO Club celebrated its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of offering education, work experience, recreation, and friendship for people living with mental illness. HERO, short for “Helping Everyone Reach Out,” began in 1995 and has since grown into a model replicated in Dauphin, Roblin, and Russell-Binscarth.
