There is a balance to strike when building a Championship squad and after a frenzied final few hours of the window, it feels like Leicester City have come close to nailing it.

To cope with a 46-match season and several two-game weeks, a big squad is necessary to cover injury and fatigue issues.

But a squad can be too big. As Marti Cifuentes has stressed through the summer, City’s group was beyond manageable at first. It needed to be streamlined if he was to keep everyone happy.

While City’s first-team squad still includes 30 players, a pretty high number, many of those are youngsters making their way in the game. There are not 30 players there who are going to be expecting a place in the starting line-up every weekend.
