LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Throughout September, the Lincoln Police Department will be focused on vehicle and pedestrian traffic to keep downtown streets safe.

Officers from LPD’s Southwest Team will work overtime while they conduct the traffic safety initiative this month.

This increased enforcement is funded through a grant provided by the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.

Downtown Lincoln is one of the city’s busiest districts, and the large number of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and scooters sharing the road creates unique safety challenges, according to LPD.

Officers have seen violations such as drivers failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, excessive speeding, distracted driving and vehicles blocking intersections. These behaviors are believed to
