An annual fundraiser asking McDonald’s customers in Sarnia-Lambton for an extra dollar or two is needed more than ever, says the head of a local charity.

“Right now we’re averaging about 2,200 people a month accessing the food bank” at the Inn of the Good Shepherd, said organization executive director Myles Vanni. “About 950 of those are kids.”

Loonies for Lunches, marking more than two decades in Sarnia, has raised about $8,000 annually in recent years to help stocking food bank shelves with juice boxes, granola bars, fruit cups, pudding cups and other healthy school snacks for children in need, Vanni said.

This year’s campaign continues until Sept. 7 at Sarnia and Petrolia McDonald’s locations, via franchise owners Colleen and Peter Buckley, he said.
