The Albanese government could be forced to release an extra 20,000 home care packages after ACT independent senator David Pocock joined the Greens and the Coalition to push to bring forward assistance to older people languishing on waiting lists.

The three-pronged attack to amend the government's aged care legislation in the Senate comes after the health department last week revealed that 121,596 older Australians are waiting to be assessed for a home care package, on top of more 87,000 people waiting for home care at the level of support they have been assessed for - including more than 1500 in the ACT
