ERATH, La. (KLFY) -- The Abbeville Council honored 99-year-old World War II veteran Paul Hardy for his service in the U.S. Army during the war.
Paul Hardy, who joined the Army as a teenager, served primarily in an administrative role rather than on the battlefield. His skills in office work were recognized early on, leading to his assignment in teaching and supervising others.
“I didn’t go into battle. They wanted to keep me in the office instead. I did pretty well on my ACT test and they said well you’re going to stay here and teach the others,” he explained.
Hardy said he joined the Army at the age of 17 years-old, and was stationed at Fort Ord, California, before being sent to Fort Shafter in Honolulu, Hawaii. His duties included helping to rebuild bases and providing guidance to oth
