ABBEVILLE, La. (KLFY) -- A federal lawsuit over Abbeville's district map has concluded with the city council voting to adopt a new map, despite ongoing concerns about racial gerrymandering.
The decision comes after more than four years of legal battles and accusations that the previous district map packed black residents into a single district, diminishing their voting power. The new map, which was approved by the city council, reduces population deviation across the city's four districts to 0.57%.
However, the Vermilion NAACP and their attorneys argue that the new map fails to address the core issue.
"Gerrymandering is what it is. Black people don't really have voting power," said Linda Williams Cockrell, president of the Vermilion NAACP.
