ROCK HILL, S.C. — A former Chester County Sheriff's deputy was found guilty of murder for the death of a retired police lieutenant in 2021.

Evan Hawthorne, 31, was convicted after a jury trial for the death of Larry Vaughan in an assault at an apartment complex in July 2021. Hawthorne was sentenced to life in prison after the murder conviction, according to court records.

Investigators found Vaughan dead at an apartment at The Anderson complex on East Main Street in Rock Hill on July 23, 2021. Hawthorne was arrested hours after the incident and charged with murder.

Vaughan worked for the Rock Hill Police Department from 1990 to 2020. He was a lieutenant with the department by the time he retired.
