WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem City Council voted 6-2 on Tuesday to approve a lease agreement that moves a proposed 5,000-seat downtown amphitheater a step closer to reality.

The agreement authorizes the city to lease about one acre of park land for the project at a rate of $12 per year. The lease will run for five years, with the option of a two-year extension.

According to city documents, the land, located between Fifth, Sixth, Marshall, and Spruce streets beside the Benton Convention Center and First Baptist Church, would be used for back-of-house operations such as dressing rooms, restrooms, and production areas.

Under the deal, the amphitheater’s ownership group will be responsible for funding temporary support structures, landscaping, fencing, and maintenance of the site.
