MARLBORO COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – South Carolina’s top education leader gave some insight into the state’s financial takeover of the Marlboro County School District.

The South Carolina Department of Education voted in July to take over the school district’s financial operations.

The department said the district failed to meet its fiscal responsibilities and provide a stable operational plan for the upcoming school year.

The district had approved a $42 million budget on July 9, which included closing and consolidating schools to help make up for a budget shortfall. Now that the state has taken over, those plans have been put on pause.
