Gov. Mike Braun may have wanted a political talking point when he signed Senate Enrolled Act 1 into law this spring, but the property tax cuts that phase in over the next three years leave cities such as Fort Wayne facing an uncertain future. It’s not known how much Fort Wayne stands to lose annually, but some cities are already talking annual shortfalls in the millions. Property taxes pay for the services residents rely on most: police and fire protection, road maintenance and neighborhood improvements. As those dollars shrink, the responsibility falls to local leaders to make sure the city can still function.
