NORMAN — Brent Venables chose to be self-deprecating rather than self-promoting after calling a full game of defensive schemes for the first time in a while.
“Pretty good,” the Oklahoma head coach said last Saturday night. “Solid. I mean, even when you haven’t been ‘calling’, you’re calling it in your mind and anticipating and adding to the conversation. So it was kind of natural.”
The 35-3 win over Illinois State last weekend was a good warmup for Venables, who will take the defensive reins again when the No. 18 Sooners face No. 14 Michigan this coming Saturday night in a primetime battle of bluebloods.
Far more common in college football than the head coaches who call defensive plays are the offensive playcallers. Lincoln Riley, Josh Heupel
