HAMMOND — Two teens were shot and injured in broad daylight this week along a commercial strip of Calumet Avenue, according to police.

Hammond police said they responded around 4:23 p.m. Monday to the 800 block of Becker Street after two males - ages 16 and 18 - reported being shot in the 5800 block of Calumet Avenue.

Both teens sustained gunshot wounds and were treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital. The 16-year-old was reportedly taken to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago for treatment.

"Preliminary information indicates the two victims met with a male in a silver vehicle, during which the suspect opened fire," police said. "The vehicle fled eastbound on Drackert Street."

Police said they are investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
