In a news release on Monday, Niagara Region Police Service (NRPS) said they and emergency services responded to a call to a home near Crowland Avenue and York Street on Sunday at 8:50 a.m. for "medical assistance call involving a child."

When police arrived, they noticed "the front door to the residence showing signs of having been forced open."

Police said they discovered an unknown person had "defeated the lock" and entered the residence sometime overnight on Saturday.

"While inside the residence, unbeknownst to the parents, their child was sexually assaulted," police said.
