As a 14-year-old, during her first week at Eden High School in St. Catharines, Ont., Jéda Anderson met a cashier, a Black former student who recognized her uniform.
She said "he was like, 'is there any Black kids at Eden? I felt like I was the only one there.'"
Anderson carried that conversation with her — the memory of someone who didn't have the chance to connect with people who looked like him in high school — and eventually created Eden's first Black Student Association, the Black Affinity Club.
The Black Affinity Club is a place for community, but also learning, said Anderson. The club hosted a seminar during one Black History Month where they talked about Black hair and its history. (Submitted by Jéda Anderson)
