Three people have died and around 20 more are injured after an iconic tourist attraction in Portugal derailed and crashed.

The Gloria funicular railway in Lisbon, one of three in the country’s capital city, has been practically destroyed in the collision at around 6pm this evening.

Emergency workers have been pulling survivors out of the wreckage.

Nine of those injured are in a serious condition in hospital.

Portuguese newspaper Observador reported a cable came loose along the railway’s route, causing it to lose control and crash into a building.

The identities of those killed or injured, including whether they were local or tourists, have also not been confirmed.
