SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - A tragic incident occurred over Labor Day weekend when a Eugene man drowned in the Willamette River on Sunday, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

LCSO officials said that sheriff's deputies and Eugene Springfield Fire responded at about 2 p.m. on Aug. 31 to a report of a man who fell off an inner tube near Clearwater Landing. Despite wearing a lifejacket, 67-year-old Luke John Poulin was caught in underwater branches and did not resurface.

Emergency responders located Poulin underwater and attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased.
