TENNESSEE, USA — A new Tennessee law requiring public schools to teach firearm safety is drawing mixed reactions from parents as it takes effect this school year.
Lawmakers passed the bill into law in 2024 with the goal of keeping students safer around guns. The curriculum covers how to safely store firearms, gun safety at school, what to do if a student finds a gun, the importance of never touching a gun and the need to always tell an adult.
Some parents, like Kristy Hyatt, said they’re uneasy about the idea. She sends her child to virtual school in Jefferson County due to school safety concerns.
