A state law taking effect this year requires Tennessee public and charter school students in kindergarten through 12th grade to learn basic gun safety concepts in school, similar to "stop, drop and roll" fire safety training.

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade will be required to learn to identify the trigger, barrel and muzzle of a gun, differences between toy guns and real ones, and learn to "demonstrate a mature attitude regarding firearms," as required by a law passed in 2024 .
