BOSTON (SHNS) - Proposals to slash the state income tax, reverse a decades-old ban on rent control, and force the Legislature and governor to open their records took another step toward the 2026 ballot Wednesday.

Attorney General Andrea Campbell's office certified a record 40 proposed laws and four proposed constitutional amendments as eligible to advance, kicking off the next -- and arguably steepest -- segment of the effort to put some of the measures before voters in 2026.

The questions address a wide range of public policy questions, several of which reflect an undercurrent of discontent with the status quo on Beacon Hill. They stand to influence legislative decisions and elections in the coming months, with some but not all of the measures likely to reach the 2026 ballot.
