Cooler temperatures are setting in across Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 4, with scattered rain in the forecast for northern areas and the Upper Peninsula, and high winds and waves expected on the Great Lakes, according to the National Weather Service.
A gale warning is in place for Lake Michigan — with Lake Superior, and Lake Huron's Saginaw Bay under a gale watch — because of wind gusts reaching 40 knots (46 mph) that will create dangerously high waves.
The highest waves are forecast in Lake Michigan, up to 13 feet, and Lake Huron up to 17 feet .
"Strong winds will cause hazardous highest waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility," the NWS said.
