BLUE GAP, AZ (AZFamily) — Investigators say a man is dead after he pointed a gun at a police officer on the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona early Wednesday afternoon.

Around noon, Navajo police received several calls about a vehicle that was on fire outside of a home in Blue Gap . A Navajo police officer from the Chinle District responded and saw a man standing outside the residence.

Police say the officer asked the man to show his hands, but that the suspect became “confrontational and aggressive.” The suspect then reportedly picked up a homemade gun and pointed it at the officer, who fired one round from his duty pistol.

The 40-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer was not injured.

The shooting is under investigation.
