MARSHALL COUNTY, Iowa ( KCCI ) - The Iowa Department of Public Health and Human Services says there are at least 18 confirmed cases of Legionnaires’ disease in Marshall County.
The disease is a form of pneumonia caused by a type of bacteria that grows in warm water and typically spreads through contaminated mist. It can be deadly if untreated.
Some symptoms include shortness of breath, headaches and chest pain.
New York experienced an outbreak this summer, which resulted in 114 confirmed cases and seven deaths.
The conditions of those diagnosed with the disease have not been released.
The Marshall County Health Department says it is working with the state and federal partners in its investigation.
