Iconic fashion designer Giorgio Armani, credited with revolutionizing celebrity red carpet fashion, has died at age 91, surrounded by loved ones, the Armani Group confirmed Thursday .

“Il Signor Armani,” as he was called by employees and collaborators, “passed away peacefully,” according to the company’s statement. Despite his age, he remained “indefatigable to the end,” working until his final days on ongoing projects and collections, the statement said.

Born in Piacenza, Italy in 1934, Armani initially studied medicine before joining the army in his twenties, according to Page Six. His fashion career began in 1957 as a window dresser at Milan’s La Rinascente department store.
