HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- A federal court has ordered New York State to pay more than $800,000 to "His Tabernacle Family Church" in Horseheads.
The U.S. District Court of Western New York ordered the payment to cover attorney fees related to the church's lawsuit over state laws that prohibit firearms in places of worship.
As WENY News reported in December of 2023, "His Tabernacle" was the plaintiff in a case against the acting superintendent for the New York State Police, and the district attorneys for both Chemung and Tompkins Counties. The church argued that the law prohibiting guns in places of worship not only violated the Second Amendment, but also the church's First Amendment right of religious freedom.
