MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Maryland officials announced Thursday that they’re one step closer to a solution for the congestion seen at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and 16th Street.

“We’re here today to celebrate the full funding that will advance the Maryland 97 Montgomery Hills project, which is Montgomery County’s number one transportation priority,” declared State Highway Administrator Will Pines.

The state agency says that section of MD-97 carries an average of about 71,500 vehicles per day. The project was first announced in 2012, and $50.8 million has been secured to fund it.

Plans for the project include adding a two-way bike lane that connects 16th Street and the I-495 bridge, adding new signals at intersections, and replacing the center lane with a raised median.
