DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — The Piscataquis County Jail is once again accepting new inmates after the Maine Department of Corrections (DOC) temporarily suspended operations last month due to a failed inspection.

The DOC’s investigation at the end of July found multiple violations of state health and safety requirements. Among the most serious issues cited was the jail’s failure to provide more than 70 required records, including incident and use-of-force reports.

"We understand that we got behind in our paperwork and we have some work to do," Chief Deputy Tom Lyford said.

In its inspection report, DOC officials also cited mishandling of medications, such as using one inmate's prescription for multiple others and not keeping track of syringes that were being brought in by the community
