CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The Cranston Police Department honored dozens of officers Thursday night who have went above and beyond the call of duty.

More than 60 officers and civilians received awards for their acts of courage, bravery and heroism.

"The individuals we're honoring have faced adversity, danger and uncertainty," Cranston Police Col. Michael Winquist said. "They responded with clarity, strength and purpose."

Several of the awards stemmed from an investigation and police chase that ended in a shootout on Plainfield Pike.

The investigation started in Johnston, when a man accused of peeking through his neighbor's window at a young girl shot and killed her father and his own mother. The suspect also injured the girl before taking off.
