BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jessica Pegula faced world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the U.S. Open semifinals, in a rematch of last year's championship match.
Pegula lost that match a year ago. The Buffalo native lost again Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium, this time 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Pegula had yet to drop a set in this year's U.S. Open, and that didn't happen in the first set. Sabalenka managed to turn things around in the second and third sets, however, in securing another championship match berth.
Sabalenka reached the finals in both the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year, and she recently won tournaments in Madrid and Miami.
Following her quarterfinal victory, Pegula said she felt confident going into her semifinal rematch.
