VERNON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Crews battled a 50-foot tree fire Thursday morning which caused a small brush fire nearby and took around 5,000 gallons of water to extinguish.

According to the Town of Vernon Fire Department, crews from Vernon and Ellington responded to the area of Harlow Street and Union Street at around 3 a.m. on Thursday for a report of a fire.

At the scene, they found a dead 50-foot tree on fire which was dropping hot embers, causing a small brush fire nearby. It took responding crews three hours and 5,000 gallons of water to put the fire out.
