An extreme fire danger warning has been issued for south-western Queensland on the weekend as travellers head to the iconic Birdsville Races.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting the extreme conditions for the state's south-west and the Channel Country on Sunday.

A high fire danger warning is in place for tomorrow.

The bureau says the region should expect winds to gather strength over the weekend.

Gusts ranging from 25km/h to 55km/h are forecast to develop on Sunday, with above-average temperatures of more than 30 degrees.

There is also the chance of thunderstorms in the south-west.

The annual Birdsville Races, a 13-race carnival on a desert track, kicked off today, attracting an influx of racing fans to the small outback town.
