WESTPORT, Conn. (WTNH) — State leaders and loved ones gathered at Sherwood Island State Park on Thursday afternoon to honor the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

Gov. Ned Lamont and family members placed flowers along the memorial at the park.

Retired Bridgeport Assistant Chief Fred Haschak was in attendance, remembering the loss of one of his own.

"I had a firefighter that worked for me for a couple of years named Dana Hannon, and he always aspired to get on the New York Fire Department, and lo and behold, he was successful," Haschak said. "Dana was one of the 343, and out of respect for him and other victims, and other firemen, the 343 firemen that passed, I do this every year."
