HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- A state house representative from Little River is pushing a bill to dissolve the Horry County Police Department, which would make the Horry County Sheriff's Office the main law enforcement agency.
Horry County is the only county in South Carolina to have both a police department and a sheriff's office. If House Bill 4542, created by Representative William Bailey, passes, that will no longer be the case.
HCPD Chief Kris Leonhardt spoke out against the bill after Bailey held a discussion with residents on Thursday.
"The reason I'm against it is because although we may be unique to the state, the only one left in the state, we are not unique to the country," Leonhardt said. "Every state that touches us has a county police."
