JACKSON COUNTY, MI — Work is underway to transform the historic grounds of Michigan’s first state prison into a farmers market and entertainment venue.

Construction began this year inside Jackson Prison at 100 Armory Court. Improvements include a new driveway from North Street, parking, lighting, landscaping, roof repairs and a concrete plaza that will serve as the market.

Work is expected to be completed before winter, Jackson County Parks Director Kyle Lewis said.

A $580,000 Spark Grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is funding the improvements.
