HOWARD COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) -- The body of Howard County's oldest cold case homicide was finally identified more than 50 years later.

In July 1971, a woman was found unconscious in a Woodstock Field after an apparent assault. She was taken to the hospital, but died from her injuries months later on Sept. 7, 1971.

Her identity was unknown, and the case went cold for around 54 years.

New DNA technology has helped law enforcement in recent years to solve or inch closer to resolutions.

DNA profiling advancement helped Howard County police identify her body after decades and determined the woman was Sadie Murray, born Sept. 7, 1924. She died in the hospital on her 47th birthday.

At the time of her death, she went by Sarah Sharkey.
