HAMPTON, Va. — A student at Kecoughtan High School was found with a firearm Friday morning during a routine safety screening, according to Hampton City Schools officials.

The weapon was detected while the school was using its weapon detection unit. A school security officer confiscated the gun and placed the student into police custody. Charges and disciplinary action are pending.

Following the incident, staff conducted additional safety checks and discovered a suspicious package on campus. Out of an abundance of caution, the school was evacuated.

The Hampton Police Division and Hampton Fire-Rescue responded to the scene and are actively investigating. No injuries have been reported.
