After an officer was assaulted in a viral video, McAllen is cracking down on non-compliant downtown bars.

In response to the assault, the city called for a special workshop to address ongoing issues within the area and filed at least three lawsuits against bars they accuse of operating without the proper permit.

With these civil court cases, McAllen city officials are looking to enforce compliance with special use permits in the Entertainment Cultural Overlay District (ECOD) encompassing 17th Street, City Manager Isaac Tawil said.
