MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Judge Mark Norris recused himself from the federal case of three former Memphis Police officers after they were charged with crimes related to the death of Tyre Nichols.
Norris' recusal came days before the judge was set to sentence the former officers. A jury in the federal case convicted Justin Smith and Tadarrius Bean of obstruction of justice. The jury also convicted Demetrius Haley of obstruction of justice, as well as using unreasonable force resulting in injury. All three men will go back on trial for those charges due to a new trial ordered by the case's new judge, Sheryl Lipman.
