SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A homeless man accused of taking a 4-year-old boy from his grandfather inside a Bay Shore mosque could face time in prison, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney announced Friday.

Police charged Nelson Priester, 39, with kidnapping in the second degree, luring a child, and endangering the welfare of a child.

On Aug. 20, Priester was sitting inside the Darul Quaran Mosque for around four hours before he approached the child, whose grandfather was in prayer, prosecutors say.

He allegedly took the child to the basement and locked them in a dark room, prosecutors say.

A Good Samaritan notified the grandfather, and police were called to the mosque. Officers were able to kick the locked door open and rescue the child. The defendant had a plastic bag
