HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WAFF ) - An Alabama representative has filed a bill aiming to make it easier for parents to obtain religious-based vaccine exemptions for their children.
“This is all about parental rights and religious liberty,” Representative Mack Butler said.
To get a religious exemption today, parents have to fill out a form and have it approved by the Department of Public Health. Butler’s pre-filed bill would allow parents to simply turn in an exemption letter to their child’s school directly.
Local pediatrician Dr. Diana Linderoth is seeing more parents saying no to vaccines.
“Unfortunately, yes, this is becoming more frequent for sure,” Linderoth said. “The first people that speaks out against the vaccine get a little more attention because that’s a new thing.”
