Mount Clemens — Dozens of colorful cars zoomed down Crocker Boulevard at speeds of up to 20 mph, and the drivers who were unable to brake in time crashed into bales of hay, laughing all the way.
The sloped boulevard in the city's downtown was lined with onlookers Saturday during the 33rd annual Mount Clemens Grand Prix soapbox derby.
The cars, which can weigh no more than 215 lbs. including the drivers, are powered by gravity.
They were adorned with stickers, or were airbrushed or hand-painted with motifs that included homages to Wonder Woman, Spongebob Squarepants and rock band Uncle Kracker.
Mike Kuessner said he and his 10-year-old granddaughter Adriana Kuessner built their car, "Bikini Bottom," with its Spongebob Squarepants theme, in his Harrison Township garage.
