OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — A kayaker was rescued on Saturday afternoon after capsizing in Lake Michigan, the Park Township Fire Department (PTFD) said.

Around 3:25 p.m., officials responded to a water rescue on Lake Michigan where a kayaker had capsized about 670 feet off the Holland South Pier.

Crews said the kayaker, a 20-year-old man from Dorr, was found clinging to his kayak when a nearby sailboat attempted to help him before fire personnel got to the scene.

When the PTFD Marine Division arrived, the sailboat was close to the pier with a rope thrown to the kayaker, who was about 70 feet away.

Officials said with eight to 10-foot swells and the sailboat drifting towards the pier, conditions were challenging.
