WOOLWICH, Maine (WABI) - A Rockland man died in a head-on crash in Woolwich early Friday morning.

Officials responded to the two-vehicle crash on U.S. Route 1 between the Montsweag Restaurant and the intersection of the Mountain Road just after 4 a.m.

As a result of the crash, both vehicles burst into flames.

Alex Colson, 38, of Rockland, died at the scene as a result of extensive injuries, according to the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver of the other vehicle was able to escape.

He was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

U.S. Rt 1 was closed for approximately 4 hours. It reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m. Friday.
