Paul Roybal, an employee of the city of Santa Fe for 24 years, says only one person can inspire him to remain in a job that’s become unsatisfying.

“If you get in, I might stay on another couple years,” Roybal said to mayoral candidate Ron Trujillo.

Roybal, 53, works in parks maintenance. “The last couple of years, there’s not been the teamwork. It used to be fun,” he said.

The two men crossed paths on the Plaza during Fiesta de Santa Fe. Trujillo wore a lemon-colored T-shirt trumpeting his candidacy. Many in the milling crowd needed no help in recognizing 56-year-old Trujillo, and several left no doubt he’s their choice in the eight-way competition for mayor.

“Ronnie has my vote. I’ve known him since high school,” one man said after stopping to embrace Trujillo.
