Hundreds of mourners gathered to honor Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, who was killed in a shooting in Porepunkah, Victoria, two weeks ago. The funeral service took place at the Police Academy Memorial Chapel in Glen Waverley, attended by family, police colleagues, and dignitaries.
Senior Constable Thompson, 59, was one of two officers fatally shot on August 26. His colleague, Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, was also killed in the incident, allegedly by gunman Dezi Freeman. A similar farewell service for Senior Constable de Waart-Hottart was held the previous Friday.
Among those attending Senior Constable Thompson's funeral were his partner, Lisa Thompson, and his sisters, Lois Kirk and Diane Thompson. Senior Constable Thompson had served in the police force for 38 years and was just days away from retirement at the time of his death. He was based at the Wangaratta Crime Investigation Unit.
