OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Frustrated Omaha residents finally have something to cheer for.

“Even if it’s three months, at least it is happening. I’m so happy,” said Marilyn Hoegemeyer.

At the end of August, the city provided an update on the downtown sinkhole . Plans for construction are set to begin Monday.

“I saw that they are preparing for something so… hopefully it does start tomorrow,” said Ebony Jones, who has lived in the area for four years.

Back in January, a garbage truck was driving through an alley on 16th and Harney streets when the concrete beneath collapsed.

The sinkhole even took hold in the Omaha mayor’s race this year . What seemed mired in the courts got an unexpected boost when storms exposed a damaged utility line that required a quicker fix.
