FERGUSON, Mo. — Police on Sunday said the man who was with Michael Brown when he was fatally shot by a Ferguson officer in August 2014, was killed earlier in the day.

A Ferguson Police Department spokesperson said officers responded at about 8:30 a.m. to a call for shots fired in the 9000 block of Abaco Drive. They found Dorian Johnson, 33, had been shot. He was taken to an area hospital where he died.

Police took one person into custody and applied for charges with the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

There were initially rumors that police were involved in the shooting, but those were false, department spokesperson Pat Washington said.

The location where Johnson was shot is about 1,000 feet northeast of Canfield Drive, where Brown was killed 11 years ago.
