NEW YORK (WPIX) — A child found nearly unconscious after being beaten in the Bronx last month has died, according to police.

The 1-year-old was found in critical condition on Aug. 28, just after 9:30 p.m. inside of 664 Union Ave. Officials said the child had been punched multiple times in the head.

Jerome Thomas, 19, was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child the following day. Sources told PIX11 News he is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

Thomas told investigators he hit the child “with a heavy hand” twice on the side of the head after the mom left the girl in his care for about 45 minutes in the Union Avenue apartment, according to the criminal complaint.
